HERAT CITY (SW): A carpet weaving factory worth $ 6 million has been inaugurated in western Heart province.

Mohammad Qurban Haqjoo, Head of Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA), said on the occasion that the factory would reduce the dependency on carpets imports.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, he said that AISA would do its best to provide more such facilities for investment and would put efforts into activating the non-functioning sectors as this could help investors.

Mohammad Asef Rahimi, Governor of Herat, also spoke at the ceremony. He said that the carpet weaving factory would prove as a positive step towards attracting investment in the country.

He added that the government has planned more programs for expanding industrial sector in Herat.

The newly inaugurated factory could produce up to 150 carpets a day and it hopes to produce up to 500 a day. Abdul Ghafar Azimi, owner of the factory, said that he also aims to export.

Lack of government’s support and a worsening political situation in the country have resulted into closing tens of factories across the country.

Hamidullah Khadem, Head of Craftsmen Union in Herat, urged leaders of the Government of National Unity to pay serious attention to reactivating the inactive units of the industrial city in Herat.

According to the officials, out of 400 factories in the industrial city, only 180 factories are active and 10000 people working there and the number of people worked there in the first years has reached to 80000.
