Kabul, Herat to face serious water shortages

18/07/2018

HERAT (SW) – The experts and officials have warned Kabul and Herat cities would run out of drinking water in few years’ time if the rampant extraction of the under-ground water continued.

Hameedullah Yalani, head of the urban water supply and canalization, expressed these views at a conference of regional heads of water supply. He said the government is trying to streamline water supply system with the help of Germany to avoid the disaster.

Eng. Ratib Hamim, head of water supply in Herat, told the conference the level and quality of under-ground are deteriorating rapidly. He, however, stressed plans are in place to improve the situation.

In the meantime, Naseer Ahmad Fazli, head of environment protection agency, said deep under-ground digging for water is one of the main factors contributing to falling levels of water.

This comes as experts warn the capital Kabul and Herat cities would face serious challenges of water in the coming ten years.
