Khostis demand shifting of voter registration centers

11/05/2018

KHOST (SW): A deadly spate of attacks in Khost, including the one aimed at voter registration center, has prompted the resident demand shifting of such centers away from public places.

The shockwaves spread here after the deadly blast in the famous Yaqubayo Mosque where voter registration was underway. This attack claimed 17 lives and left 34 more wounded. The local civil society demand such centers should be moved away from densely populated public places at the earliest.

Abdul Reman Mohabbat, provincial head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), has acknowledged that the registration centers in such public places are not safe. He clarified mosques and schools were selected for the purpose on the directives of the president Mohammad Ashraf Ghani in a bid to curb corruption.

He added lack of budget and resources left no other alternative.

We wished to have the views of the provincial police headquarters on this matter, but to no avail.

The local civil society fear if situation persisted, not many would take part in the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections.
