KABUL (SW): The Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Monday announced support for the Helmand sit-in for peace in the country.
Abdul Rauf Ibrahimi, speaker of the WJ, said today the demand by Helmand residents for peace in the country is legitimate call, and the house fully endorses it. Ibrahimi said the government should also announce support for this civil movement for peace.
In solidarity with the protesters in Helmand, a number of civil society members in Balkh and Zabul provinces also erected sit-in camps for peace.
Last week, a brazen suicide attack outside the Ghazni Mohammad Ayub Khan stadium in Lashkargah city killed 15 people. This prompted the locals to launch ‘Helmand Sit-in’ for peace, hold hunger strike and urge all parties of the conflict to ceasefire.
A group of religious scholars in Helmand have also promised to mediate for peace.
