KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – At least 98 public schools are closed in Kandahar province and as many more have no proper building for children to study in.
Nazar Mohammad Samimi, director education, told Salam Watandar the 98 schools are closed down not because of insecurity, but due to lack of enough staff and lack of interest among some communities. He said closing down of these schools has deprived up to 50,000 children of their right to education.
He pointed that these on top of this, there is no single public school in the Shorawak, Ghorak and Registan districts.
A public sector school teacher, Mohammad Nabi Khan, acknowledged these issues. He said lack of resources such as books, furniture and proper buildings are other serious constraints hindering the spread of education. He urged the government to take effective steps to reopen the schools are that are still closed due to various reasons.
In total, there are 474 registered public schools in the province in which a total of 330,000 students including only 87,000 girls are studying.
