KABUL (SW): In addition to the normal university admissions for girls, 7000 more seats have been reserved for girls entering universities in the new academic year.

In connection with the International Women’s Day, the Ministry of Higher Education announced its plans to strengthen the presence of girls in the educational institutions.

Arifa Paikar, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Higher Education, said that 321 girls were sent abroad to study for undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD degrees while 713 others have been provided scholarships to study at public universities across the country.

Arifa Paikar informed that a social equality strategy has been developed for Afghanistan’s educational system, based on which, by the year 2020, at least 20% of the leadership positions will be occupied by women and girls.

On the basis of the MoHE’s incentive program for women and girls, in the upcoming year, 20 female leaders will be selected for key positions such as university chancellor, vice chancellor, and other key positions, Arifa Paikar added.

Kamal Sadaat, Deputy Minister for Youth Affairs at the Ministry of Information and Culture, said that the Ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with 34 institutions of higher education based on which, 9500 girls who could not afford to study will be supported to continue their education.
