60 rebels fleeing Faryab killed in Badghis

PUL-I-ALAM/ PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW): More than 60 armed rebels fleeing ongoing offensives in northern Faryab province have been killed in neighboring Badghis province, an official said.

Afghan security forces are engaged in a clean-up operation in Faryab that was launched after a suicide attack that left more than 20 dead last month.

Abdul Rasool Rehmati, head of the Special Forces’ operation in Badghis's Bala Murghab district informed that 17 insurgents have been captured alive. He told SW this joint operation by the government forces was launched when the Taliban started escaping from Faryab.

Also on Thursday, authorities in the eastern Logar province have confiscated some 500kg of explosives.

Mohammad Wara Indrabi, Deputy Provincial Police Chief said the explosives consist of anti-tank mines, landmines, rockets and others. He told SW these explosives were confiscated from Muhammad Agha, Baraki Barak, and Sarkh districts.

The Deputy Police Chief added that a number of militants have been arrested in connection.
