MONITORING (SW) – The Asian Football Federation on Wednesday placed Afghanistan in Group E with the likes of India, Qatar, Bangladesh and Oman for preliminary draw in connection with the qualifying rounds of FIFA World Cup 2022.
The preliminary draws were organized at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia. Afghanistan would play home and away games with its competitors in the Group E in coming months.
A total of 40 selective Asian teams would compete among them from Sep. 05, 2019 till June 09, 2020. Only top 12 teams would qualify for the eventual qualifying round for the FIFA World Cup 2022 as well as the Asian Championship 2023.
Across the globe, some 211 teams in six continents would play qualifying rounds for the FIFA World Cup 2022.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, which will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. In addition, the tournament will be the last to involve 32 teams, with an increase to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament. The reigning World Cup champions are France.
