{"id":7679,"date":"2022-01-01T06:48:11","date_gmt":"2022-01-01T06:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=7679"},"modified":"2022-10-15T14:20:38","modified_gmt":"2022-10-15T14:20:38","slug":"45-journalists-were-killed-worldwide-in-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2022\/01\/45-journalists-were-killed-worldwide-in-2021\/","title":{"rendered":"45 journalists killed worldwide in 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>KABUL (SW) &#8211;\u00a0A total of 45 journalists were killed worldwide in 2021, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) says, adding it was \u201cone of the lowest death tolls\u201d it had recorded for any year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The toll included nine in\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0\u2013 the highest number suffered by a single country, eight in\u00a0Mexico, four in\u00a0India\u00a0and three in\u00a0Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile this decrease is welcome news, it is small comfort in the face of continued violence,\u201d IFJ said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Reporters Without Borders (RSF) gave a similar toll of 46 killings of journalists two weeks ago, also noting it as its lowest-ever since starting its tallies in 1995.<\/p>\n<div id=\"aljazeera_incontent_dynamic1\" class=\"fs-dynamic\" data-slot=\"complete\" data-freestar-ad=\"__728x90 __336x280\" data-google-query-id=\"CIGhzpX6j_UCFREJcgod3RQOYg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/15184186\/aljazeera_incontent_dynamic_0__container__\">The IFJ added that media workers \u201cmore often than not are killed for exposing corruption, crime and abuse of power in their communities, cities and countries\u201d.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Looking at the tally regionally, Asia Pacific was the deadliest, with 20 killings. The Americas followed as the second deadliest with 10. In third place was Africa with eight.<\/p>\n<p>Europe had six journalists killed, while the Middle East and Arab countries had just one.<\/p>\n<p>IFJ said \u201cthe risks associated with armed conflict have reduced in recent years\u201d due to less journalists being able to report on the ground.<\/p>\n<p data-inc=\"2\">It added however that \u201cthe threats of crime gang and drug cartels\u2019 rule from the slums in Mexico to the streets of European cities in Greece and the Netherlands continue to increase\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>IFJ Secretary-General Anthony Bellanger reiterated the organisation\u2019s support for a United Nations convention for the protection of journalists to \u201censure accountability for journalists\u2019 killings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The year 2021 also saw a crackdown on journalists.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0new report from the non-profit Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the number of journalists behind bars reached a global high in 2021.
