KABUL (SW) \u2013 In the wake of the Taliban\u2019s Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, up to 70 % independent media operations have ceased to exist.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to a survey conducted by the National Union of Journalists on the status of journalists in Afghanistan, under the Islamic Emirate\u2019s rule in Afghanistan, only up to 30% of the media continue to operate in the country while 70 % of the previously active press offices have ceased operation.<\/p>\n

As a result, the Afghan National Union of Journalists (ANUJ) estimates that 33 percent of journalists are active in the country and the remaining 67 percent have lost their jobs.<\/p>\n

Masroor Lotfi, head of the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan, said at a press conference on Sunday that the aim of the study was to get a clear picture of the press freedom and overall media sector. \u201cEven those media houses still operating are faced with numerous issues\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n

The Head of the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan further said that the survey also showed that a large number of female journalists, 67 % are worried about their future and demand their rights from the Islamic Emirate.<\/p>\n

One of the female journalists who was wished not to be named, said that women have been out rightly asked by the Islamic Emirate not to work.”Every citizen has the right to access information, and I want that right too, and there are hundreds of other ladies like me\u201d, she said.<\/p>\n

The National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan urged the Islamic Emirate to respect and promote press freedom.<\/p>\n

According to the officials of the National Union of Journalists of Afghanistan, the survey was conducted between 21 to 30 September in 28 provinces with the participation of some 1500 working journalists.<\/p>\n
