KABUL (SW) \u2013 The U.S. President Joe Biden assured Afghan President Ashraf Ghani of diplomatic and humanitarian support on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a phone call, Biden and Ghani \u201cagreed that the Taliban\u2019s current offensive is in direct contradiction to the movement\u2019s claim to support a negotiated settlement of the conflict,\u201d a White House statement said.<\/p>\n

According to Ghani\u2019s office, President Biden reassured that support for the Afghan forces will continue. It said both sides stressed the importance of Afghans coming together for peace and security and reiterated the enduring partnership, continued diplomatic and economic support for the Afghan government, security forces and the importance of preserving the gains of the last twenty years.<\/p>\n

President Ghani expressed his confidence that the ANDSF will protect and defend Afghanistan, said the presidency.<\/p>\n

Biden has set a formal end to the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan for Aug. 31 as he looks to disengage from a conflict that started after al Qaeda attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, reported the Euro news.<\/p>\n

Violence has risen sharply since the withdrawal plan was announced in April, with the Taliban launching offensives, taking districts and important border crossings, and encircling or closing in on several provincial capitals.<\/p>\n

The Taliban control about half of Afghanistan\u2019s district centers, the senior U.S. general said this week, indicating a rapidly deteriorating security situation.<\/p>\n

Biden told Ghani the United States would remain engaged diplomatically \u201cin support of a durable and just political settlement,\u201d the White House said.<\/p>\n

The United States is also preparing to begin evacuating thousands of Afghan applicants for special immigration visas (SIVs) who risk retaliation from Taliban insurgents because they worked for the U.S. government.<\/p>\n

Biden on Friday authorized up to $100 million from an emergency fund to meet \u201cunexpected urgent\u201d refugee needs stemming from the situation, the White House said.<\/p>\n

Biden also authorized the release of $200 million in services and articles from the inventories of U.S. government agencies to meet the same needs, it said.<\/p>\n

The State Department condemned the Taliban\u2019s targeted attacks on former interpreters and other Afghans as well as the destruction of infrastructure.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe vehemently condemn the targeted attacks, the destruction of vital infrastructure, as well as other attacks against the people of Afghanistan,\u201d spokeswoman Jalina Porter said at a regular news briefing.<\/p>\n

Educated Afghans \u2013 especially women and girls who were barred from school and most work under Taliban rule \u2013 have voiced alarm at the insurgents rapid advance, as have members of ethnic and sectarian minorities persecuted under the Taliban\u2019s severe interpretation of Sunni Islam.<\/p>\n

The first batch of Afghan evacuees and their families is expected to be flown before the end of the month to Fort Lee, a U.S. military base in Virginia, where they will wait for the final processing of their visa applications.<\/p>\n

About 2,500 Afghans could be brought to the facility, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Richmond, the Pentagon said on Monday.<\/p>\n
