HERAT CITY (SW) \u2013 At least 19 lives were lost to flash floods caused by torrential rains in Herat and Ghor provinces alone, officials said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Jilani Farhad, spokesman for the governor of Herat, said that 12 people, including a woman and four children, were killed last night in floods in the Adraskan district of the province. According to him, the bodies of 4 people have not been identified yet.<\/p>\n

The spokesman for the governor of Herat added that in addition to the financial losses to agricultural lands and residential houses; livestock was also damaged.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, officials from the Herat Department of Disaster Management have said that last night’s floods in Oba, Chesht, Pashtun Zarghun, Guzara, Injil, Karkh, Adreskan, Shindand, Zandijan, Ghorian and Gulran districts of the province caused huge financial losses to agricultural lands.<\/p>\n

Roya Hamidi, director general of finance and administration at the Herat Disaster Management Authority, told Salam Watandar that 10 shepherds with 800 sheep had disappeared in the last 24 hours in the village of Gardan in the Oba district of the province.<\/p>\n

According to her, dozens of houses, agricultural lands and gardens have been destroyed in Oba district. According to the financial and administrative director of the Herat Department of Disaster Management, 10 villages in Chesht district have been flooded, but due to the remoteness and presence of the Taliban in these villages, no casualties have been reported so far.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Juma Khan Bakhtari, the head of Ghor province\u2019s Natural Disaster Management, said that 5 people were killed in Saghar district and 2 in Shahrak district due to floods in the province. Bakhtari added that the recent floods destroyed 150 houses in seven other districts of the province.<\/p>\n

The floods also destroyed agricultural canals, orchards and dozens of acres of farmland, according to Ghor’s director of disaster management. According to local Ghor officials, they have begun the process of distributing emergency aid to flood victims.<\/p>\n
