HERAT CITY (SW) \u2013 Local officials in Herat on Sunday claimed to have put off the massive fire that erupted at the Islam Qala port a day earlier.<\/p>\n
Jailani Farhad, spokesman for the governor of Herat, told Salam Watandar the fire at the Islam Qala customs was finally contained by the Herat fire brigade in cooperation with the Iranian fire brigade at around 10 o’clock last night.<\/p>\n
Though, some Iranian media outlets have reported the deaths of more than 40 people, including the drivers of oil tankers, but the spokesman for the governor of Herat said that no exact information was yet available about the casualties.<\/p>\n
Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for the Herat Health Department, confirmed that 17 people have got injured.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Younus Qazizada, head of the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment, said that about 500 oil tankers have been completely burnt. According to him, up to $ 50 million have been lost as a result of the fire. The head of the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Investment added that the amount of damage will be clarified in the coming days.<\/p>\n
