Legal experts and religious scholars say that consultation between husbands and wives on matters related to family life is one of the effective factors in strengthening and improving family relationships.

Mohammad Yousuf Yousufi, a legal expert, says that women, within the framework of Islamic teachings and applicable laws, have human dignity and a specific position, and their views on matters related to family life can be taken into consideration.

“From a legal and Hanafi jurisprudence perspective, women have human dignity and a specific position and can express their views on matters related to family life. Family life can be more stable when husbands and wives respect Islamic principles and each other and consult one another on family matters. When disagreements arise, seeking advice from family elders, religious scholars and trusted people can help resolve problems and create better understanding,” he adds.

Samiullah Barez, another legal expert, also says that a successful family is based on love, understanding, mutual respect and fulfilling the responsibilities of each family member. He says that paying attention to the views of family members can also be effective in reducing disagreements.

“From the perspective of Hanafi jurisprudence, the family is based on love, understanding, mutual respect and respect for Islamic principles. Husbands and wives can consult each other on matters related to family life and express their views. Paying attention to each other’s opinions can help reduce misunderstandings and strengthen family relationships. Respecting the rights of both husbands and wives, respecting parents and maintaining good relationships among family members are important aspects of family life. Respecting these principles can pave the way for a peaceful and stable life,” he says.

Meanwhile, Qutbuddin Mujtahid, a religious scholar, says that Islam emphasizes dignity, respect, good treatment and consultation in family life.

“In Hanafi jurisprudence, women have a specific position and rights and can express their views and offer advice on matters related to family life. The responsibilities of both husbands and wives should be respected within the framework of Islamic teachings, and consultation and understanding between them can be effective in managing family affairs. Respecting parents and relatives and maintaining good family relationships are also important Islamic teachings,” he adds.

However, the experiences of some women interviewed by Salam Watandar show that in a number of families, decisions on some important matters are made mostly by husbands or family elders. They say that they play an important role in the daily affairs of the household but have fewer opportunities to express their views on some major decisions in married life.

One of these women says that in her family, decisions on some important matters, including buying land and expensive items, are mostly made by her husband and family elders, and that women’s views are given less consideration in some cases. She says,

“In our home, all the major decisions are made by my husband and father-in-law. If I have an opinion, I express it, but in the end, they make the decision themselves. Sometimes I feel that if women’s views were heard more, many problems could be reduced because women share both the difficulties and good times of family life, and their opinions should also be considered.”

Another woman interviewed by Salam Watandar says that she actively takes part in the daily affairs of the household, but that in some financial matters and important family decisions, the final decision is mostly made by her husband.

“Sometimes I am consulted about some matters, but the final decision is made by my husband. In my view, if husbands and wives consulted each other more and had a better understanding of important family matters, it could improve their relationship and create greater peace in the family,” she says.

Another woman interviewed says that although she gives her opinion on household needs and the purchase of some items, the final decision in many cases is made by the men in the family.

“Sometimes I am also asked for my opinion on some matters, but the final decision is mostly made by my husband and family elders. In my opinion, if family members consulted each other more about important matters and listened to each other’s views with respect, it could pave the way for greater understanding and peace in the family,” she says.

Paying attention to the views of both husbands and wives on family affairs and consulting each other can be effective in reducing misunderstandings, strengthening family relationships and creating a more peaceful family environment. From the perspective of Islamic Sharia, consultation, mutual understanding, good treatment and respect for each other’s rights and responsibilities are considered important principles of family life.

Reporter: Sabrina Gunish

Islam emphasizes consultation, mutual understanding, respect for each other’s rights and responsibilities, and good treatment in family life.
