A number of beekeepers in the province say they have been keeping bees for years to earn an income for themselves and their families. They say that if more facilities, professional training, and better marketing opportunities are provided, they can increase honey production.

They also identify honeybee diseases, a shortage of training programs, and difficulties in marketing as the major challenges in the sector.

Nadia, a 29-year-old resident of Kama district, says she has been beekeeping for about nine years. She started this business with the aim of creating a source of income for herself and her family.

She initially invested between 300,000 and 600,000 Afghanis and now earns around 1.5 million Afghanis annually from the business, which also provides work for seven other people.

“I have been beekeeping for nine years. My goal was to pave the way for myself and others to earn a halal income and produce natural honey. I now have about 200 beehives, earn around 1.5 million Afghanis a year, and provide work for seven other people. I produce about three tons of honey every year,” she adds.

Madina, another 32-year-old beekeeper in Kama district, says beekeeping can be a good opportunity for women to earn an income.

“Beekeeping is a good opportunity for women to earn an income. If training programs and better marketing opportunities are provided, more women can work in this sector and help strengthen their families’ economic situation,” she says.

She considers honeybee diseases, a shortage of training programs, and difficulties in marketing as major challenges for beekeepers.

Zahidullah Shinwari, a 35-year-old resident of Shinwar district, also says he has been beekeeping for about 12 years. He now has 650 beehives, and in addition to his family members, three other people work with him.

According to him, the honey produced from his beehives varies from year to year, ranging from five to 10 tons annually.

“I now have 650 beehives, and in addition to my family members, three other people work with me. Every year, my beehives produce between five and 10 tons of natural honey. Beekeeping is a profitable business, and if more support and training programs are provided, production will increase and more job opportunities will be created for the youth,” he adds.

He also says that demand for natural honey has increased in recent years and that the honey market has improved compared with the past.

Meanwhile, Sayed Naeem, an economic expert, says Nangarhar has good capacity for developing beekeeping because of its suitable climate, green orchards, and wide variety of plants.

According to him, investment in the sector and greater support for beekeepers can increase family incomes and help create job opportunities.

“In Afghanistan, particularly in Nangarhar, there is great capacity for honey production. If investment is made in this sector and beekeepers are supported, job opportunities will be created for hundreds of people, and the sector can play an important role in the country’s economic growth,” he says.

However, to assess the situation of the beekeeping sector in Nangarhar, we sought the views of the Nangarhar Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock on the number of active farms and beehives, annual honey production, the level of support provided to beekeepers, and the challenges facing the sector. Officials from the department had not provided a response by the time this report was published.

According to beekeepers and experts, Nangarhar has a good capacity for beekeeping, which can help grow the sector and provide income and job opportunities for families and the youth, in addition to honey production. However, developing the sector requires training, technical support, access to markets, and accurate data on the situation of beekeeping in the province.

Reporter: Alia Aziz

For some women and youth in Nangarhar, beekeeping is not only a way to produce honey; it has also become a source of income to cover living expenses and create job opportunities for others.
