They say the diseases not only threaten the health of dairy cows but also directly affect milk production, household incomes, and the livelihoods of hundreds of families. According to livestock owners, cases of various diseases among dairy cattle have increased in recent months, while limited access to veterinary services has made their challenges even greater.

Officials at the Kapisa Department of Agriculture and Livestock say that efforts to control livestock diseases and support livestock owners are ongoing through the establishment of nearly 60 veterinary clinics and the implementation of preventive programs.

A number of livestock owners say that the lack of veterinary clinics near villages, the shortage of veterinarians, and high treatment costs have made it difficult to provide timely care for their animals. They say that diseases such as fever, mastitis, digestive disorders, foot problems, and loss of appetite have weakened dairy cows and reduced milk production.

Abdulmatin, a livestock owner in Kapisa, says the lack of timely vaccination and proper animal care are the main causes of disease outbreaks among dairy cattle.

“Because they do not receive vaccinations on time and do not have proper nutrition and care, dairy cows become sick. These diseases have a negative impact on milk production. Some low-income families depend on dairy products for their livelihoods and cover their household expenses through this work. The spread of these diseases negatively affects poor families, and we have not received enough awareness about disease prevention,” he says.

Hekmatullah, another livestock owner from Nijrab district, complains about the shortage of vaccines and the lack of proper veterinary services. He says,

“Dairy cows are most commonly affected by ‘Tabaq,’ or foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). It is a highly contagious disease, and once it appears, it can spread throughout an entire village. Vaccines are sometimes available, but they are in short supply. There is no veterinary clinic here where livestock can be vaccinated. Many dairy cows also suffer from digestive problems and mastitis, which causes their udders to become swollen.”

Some livestock owners complain that they have to travel long distances to seek treatment for their livestock because there are no veterinary clinics in their villages.

Abdulrahman, a resident of Nijrab district, calls on authorities to provide easier access to veterinary services. He says,

“When a cow becomes sick, we go to the district market because there is no veterinary clinic in the village or nearby areas. Our request is that veterinary clinics be established in or near villages so that people’s problems can be addressed. They should also hold training programs for the people.”

Meanwhile, veterinary experts say that the most common livestock diseases are bacterial and parasitic infections, including anaplasmosis, theileriosis, and babesiosis, which are commonly seen among dairy cattle in many parts of the country, including Kapisa.

Abdul Habib, a veterinarian, identifies shared livestock markets as one of the main factors contributing to disease transmission. He emphasizes that vaccination and preventive measures can help reduce the spread of diseases. He explains,

“Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is very common in Kapisa, and the main reason for its transmission and spread is shared livestock markets. Livestock owners should pay greater attention to their livestock, ensure they receive vaccinations, and maintain contact with veterinary centers. I recommend that livestock owners vaccinate any animal they buy as soon as possible. Second, animal shelters should be cleaned, sprayed, and disinfected every month. The entrances of stables should also be covered with nets because insects are among the main carriers of disease.”

Meanwhile, officials at the Kapisa Department of Agriculture and Livestock say they have undertaken various programs to prevent the spread of livestock diseases.

Abduljalil Rahmani, Head of Livestock Services and Animal Health at the Kapisa Department of Agriculture, says that by establishing dozens of animal health service centers, the department has made efforts to increase people’s access to veterinary services.

“These challenges can be controled because nearly 60 veterinary clinics in villages and districts are providing services to people. We have programs to administer vaccines against various diseases before they spread. We also provide awareness about contagious diseases during different seasons of the year through livestock managers and professional staff in districts and treatment centers. Similarly, we provide guidance on hygiene practices, proper nutrition, and the storage of healthy feed throughout the year,” he says.

Although officials say that preventive programs and veterinary centers are available, many livestock owners still believe that access to veterinary services in remote areas remains insufficient. They call on authorities to pay greater attention to establishing veterinary centers, providing medicines and vaccines, preventing the spread of livestock diseases, and organizing awareness programs. For many families in Kapisa, livestock farming remains their only source of income and livelihood.

Reporter: Masouda Akbari

Livestock diseases in Kapisa have become a serious concern for livestock owners.
