As the use of social media continues to increase and in-person employment opportunities for women decline, online sales have become an important source of income for many women and girls in Badghis Province. They say that despite ongoing economic hardship, they make efforts to cover part of their living expenses through online businesses.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Laleh Akrami, an online sales manager at an online business, says she has been working in the sector for nearly a year. She says she started the business with the aim of creating employment opportunities and achieving financial independence<\/p>\n

According to her, a number of girls now work alongside her and earn an income through online sales. Laleh, who sells skincare and haircare products, started her business with a small amount of capital and has gradually expanded it.<\/p>\n

“My goal in starting this business was to create jobs and promote entrepreneurship. I have been able to earn an income, and so have those who work with me. I started my business with 7,000 Afghanis, and, praise be to Allah, I have been able to earn a good income,” she says.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a number of women in Badghis say online sales have given them the opportunity to engage in economic activities without being present in a workplace.<\/p>\n

Ziba Ehsas, a 23-year-old who began selling products online about a year ago, says the independence of online work and the restrictions on women’s employment were the main reasons she entered the business.<\/p>\n

“I chose this work because it allows me to work independently, and I do not have a boss overseeing me. Online work is especially beneficial for women because opportunities for in-person employment have become extremely limited. The income I earn sometimes covers my personal expenses, but so far it has not been enough to cover my family’s entire expenses,” she adds.<\/p>\n

Arezo, another girl in Badghis who has been working in online sales for more than two years, says she started her business with a small amount of capital and now has customers from several provinces.<\/p>\n

“I started with a small amount of my own money. Now I have customers from several provinces, and they are satisfied with the quality of my products,” she says.<\/p>\n

Fawzia Aimaq, a 23-year-old girl, also considers online sales a way for women to continue their economic activities.<\/p>\n

“I provide and sell goods online. We offer garments, cosmetics, shoes, and purses, and we also accept orders from customers,” she adds.<\/p>\n

However, women engaged in online sales say their income is not always stable and that they face numerous challenges.<\/p>\n

Asila Osmani, a 12th-grade student in Badghis, turned to online sales because of her family’s financial difficulties. She says low sales have become one of the biggest challenges in this business.<\/p>\n

“My family’s financial situation was not good, so I wanted to work while continuing my studies to help cover part of my own expenses and my family’s needs. Unfortunately, I do not have a fixed income, and sales are very low. Sometimes we cannot even afford basic necessities,” she says.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, technology experts emphasize that the growth of online sales could create new employment opportunities for women and youth.<\/p>\n

Mirwais Sadeqi, a technology expert, says that product quality, how sellers interact with customers, providing accurate information, and timely delivery are among the most important factors for success in online business. He explains,<\/p>\n

“The growth of online sales has created significant opportunities for youth, such as creating jobs, launching small businesses, and generating income through social media and the internet. To earn customers’ trust, sellers should provide accurate information about their products, respond quickly to customers, and ensure that orders are delivered safely and on time.”<\/p>\n

Despite the relative growth of online sales in Afghanistan, the lack of strong internet infrastructure and low public trust in online shopping remain major challenges to the sector’s expansion. In many provinces, particularly remote areas, poor internet connectivity and the high cost of internet packages have reduced the activities of online sellers to communicate regularly with their customers.<\/p>\n
