Company officials, meanwhile, say their products comply with technical standards and undergo laboratory testing before being released to the market.

Mohammad Yasin Azizi, a representative of the company, told Salam Watandar, “We produce two types of fertilizers—chemical and organic—in both liquid and granular forms, in accordance with international standards. Our products are assessed in a well-equipped laboratory using modern equipment and the company’s specific codes before they are released to the market.”

Farmers, however, say that the presence of low-quality fertilizers on the market has negatively affected their agricultural productivity. They emphasize that improving soil fertility and ensuring access to cheap, high-quality fertilizers are essential for increasing productivity and sustaining agriculture. They also call on the authorities to exercise stricter oversight of fertilizer quality in the market.

Habibullah, a farmer, says, “There are fertilizers on the market that are of very poor quality and look like ash. Their packaging meets the standards, but the fertilizer itself is of poor quality. They are also very expensive. One sack of locally produced fertilizer currently costs 2,500 Afghanis, but it should cost no more than 1,500.”

Mirwais, another farmer, says, “More fertilizer companies should be established to bring prices down so that we can afford to buy fertilizer. Currently, prices are too high, and we cannot afford to fertilize our land.”

Meanwhile, agricultural experts say that the unscientific use of fertilizers—particularly when farmland is already under pressure from climate change—can cause further damage to natural resources.

Saifullah Sadat, an agricultural expert, says, “If chemical or organic fertilizers are used in a non-standard way, they not only fail to have a positive impact on plant growth but can also contribute to soil degradation and reduce soil fertility. Therefore, to use fertilizers properly, methods such as soil testing, selecting the appropriate type of fertilizer, determining the required amount, and applying it at the right time should be considered.”

Officials from the Balkh Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock also say that they have conducted training and awareness programs for farmers to promote sustainable and climate-adaptive agriculture.

Hussain Azimi, Manager of Agricultural Promotion at the Department of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock of Balkh, says,

“The Balkh Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with private organizations and fertilizer-producing companies, conducts daily training and awareness programs across the province and its districts on the proper use of fertilizers. These programs help farmers understand the effectiveness of different types of fertilizers. These fertilizers, compared with chemical fertilizers, are particularly beneficial under current water-scarcity conditions because they help retain soil moisture and do not degrade soil structure.”

These concerns come at a time when climate change, declining water resources, changing rainfall patterns, and reduced soil productivity are among the most important challenges facing Afghanistan’s agricultural sector.

Experts emphasize that the scientific and balanced use of fertilizers, soil testing, and the promotion of climate-adaptive agricultural practices can play a crucial role in maintaining soil fertility, increasing agricultural productivity, and strengthening farmers’ resilience to the consequences of climate change. Under these circumstances, establishing companies that produce high-quality fertilizers, together with expanding farmer awareness programs, can be part of the solution to addressing these challenges.

Reporter: Sebghatullah Toraan

At a time when farmers are increasingly concerned about declining agricultural productivity caused by climate change, changes in rainfall, soil erosion, and declining soil fertility, the opening of a factory producing organic and chemical fertilizers, equipped with a modern agricultural laboratory, has emerged as a promising initiative to support agricultural production in Balkh Province.

[990,179,16
405,2004,2005,2006,2007
post-30236","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest","category-economy-business","category-report","tag-balkh","tag-fertilizers","tag-factory","tag-organic","tag-chemical
["GET
