The government of Japan, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has announced a new joint initiative titled \u201cResilient Income Solutions Empowering Alternative Livelihoods\u201d (RISE) aimed at supporting vulnerable communities in Afghanistan.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The project is funded by the government of Japan with a total budget of USD 2,353,333 and will be implemented from March 2026 to March 2027. The initiative seeks to assist vulnerable Afghans\u2014particularly women\u2014by promoting sustainable livelihood opportunities and reducing economic vulnerability.<\/p>\n

Kenichi Masamoto, Ambassador of Japan to Afghanistan, reaffirmed Japan\u2019s commitment to Afghanistan\u2019s development, stating,<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government of Japan remains committed to supporting economic recovery in Afghanistan, particularly for women and vulnerable communities. This project will build upon our previous support to continue providing much-needed sustainable livelihood opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The RISE project will focus on provinces most affected by livelihood instability, food insecurity, and the pressure of returning populations, specifically Balkh and Nimroz.<\/p>\n

The project will provide viable alternatives to illicit economic activities and harmful coping mechanisms. And, it aims to stabilize high-risk communities that are experiencing rapid economic and demographic changes.<\/p>\n

Stephen Rodriques, Resident Representative of UNDP Afghanistan, highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating,<\/p>\n

\u201cThis project is the latest chapter in the long partnership between UNDP and Japan, which continues to deliver real impact for the people of Afghanistan. In a time when Afghanistan is faced with overlapping economic, social, and environmental emergencies, this support from the government of Japan is vital and offers hope to the vulnerable communities most affected by these crises.\u201d<\/p>\n
