{"id":26103,"date":"2024-12-15T06:08:23","date_gmt":"2024-12-15T06:08:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=26103"},"modified":"2024-12-15T06:08:23","modified_gmt":"2024-12-15T06:08:23","slug":"arab-countries-call-for-inclusive-government-in-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2024\/12\/arab-countries-call-for-inclusive-government-in-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Arab countries call for &#8216;inclusive&#8217; government in Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; Top diplomats from eight\u00a0Arab League\u00a0countries have agreed at a meeting in Jordan to \u201csupport a peaceful transition process\u201d in Syria following President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s overthrow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Foreign ministers from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt, the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar issued a joint statement after they met in the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba, reported Al Jazeera.<\/p>\n<div class=\"more-on\"><\/div>\n<p>They said \u201call political and social forces\u201d must be represented in the new Syrian government and\u00a0warned against \u201cany ethnic, sectarian or religious discrimination\u201d and called for \u201cjustice and equality for all citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The political process in Syria should be supported by \u201cthe United Nations and the Arab League, in accordance with the principles of Security Council Resolution 2254\u201d, a resolution in 2015 which set out a roadmap for a negotiated settlement, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Arab diplomats also attended a separate meeting in Aqaba that included US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\"><\/div>\n<p>That meeting also called for an inclusive and representative government that respects the rights of minorities and does not offer \u201ca base for terrorist groups\u201d, according to Blinken, who spoke at a news conference.<\/p>\n<p>Rebuilding institutions and forming an inclusive Syria are key terms from the Arab diplomats which \u201coverlap with a lot of the positions of other dignitaries in attendance today in Aqaba\u201d, said Al Jazeera\u2019s Nour Odeh, reporting from Jordan\u2019s capital, Amman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody wants to see Syria break into several countries,\u201d she added. \u201cThey want to see a stable Syria that can welcome back the millions of refugees, and they\u2019re offering their support, political, financial and humanitarian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to their statement, the Arab ministers said state institutions must be preserved to stop Syria from \u201cslipping into chaos\u201d, also calling to boost joint \u201cefforts to combat terrorism \u2026 as it poses a threat to Syria and to the security of the region and the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>They also condemned \u201cIsrael\u2019s incursion into the buffer zone\u00a0with Syria\u201d, its air strikes in Syria, and demanded \u201cthe withdrawal of Israeli forces\u201d from Syrian territory.<\/p>\n<p>Following al-Assad\u2019s removal, a transitional government installed by the rebel forces has insisted the rights of all Syrians will be protected, as will the rule of law.<\/p>\n<div class=\"container--ads in-article-ads\"><\/div>\n<h6><em><strong>ENDS<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; Top diplomats from eight\u00a0Arab League\u00a0countries have agreed at a meeting in Jordan to \u201csupport a peaceful transition process\u201d in Syria following President Bashar al-Assad\u2019s overthrow.
