MONITORING (SW) – Amnesty International accused Israel of \u201ccommitting genocide\u201d against Palestinians in Gaza since the start of the bombardment last year, saying its new report was a \u201cwake-up call\u201d for the international community.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The London-based rights organisation said its\u00a0findings\u00a0were based on \u201cdehumanising and genocidal statements by Israeli government and military officials\u201d, satellite images documenting devastation, fieldwork and ground reports from Gazans.<\/p>\n

\u201cMonth after month, Israel has treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group unworthy of human rights and dignity, demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them,\u201d Amnesty chief Agnes Callamard said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur damning findings must serve as a wake-up call to the international community: this is genocide. It must stop now,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is absolutely no doubt that Israel has military objectives. But the existence of military objectives does not negate the possibility of a genocidal intent,\u201d Callamard told\u00a0AFP<\/em>\u00a0at a press conference in The Hague.<\/p>\n

She said the organisation had based its findings on the criteria set out in the UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

Meanwhile, Gaza\u2019s civil defence agency said that 20 people, including five children, were killed in an Israeli strike on a displacement camp near Khan Younis in the territory\u2019s south.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n

The agency\u2019s spokesperson Mahmud Bassal told\u00a0AFP<\/em>\u00a0there were \u201c20 martyrs, including five children, and dozens were injured after the occupation (Israel) bombed the tents of the displaced in the Al-Mawasi area\u201d near Khan Yunis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Israel\u2019s invasion of Gaza Strip, sparked by Hamas\u2019 Oct 7, 2023 attack, surpasses 13 months. At least 44,532 Palestinians and<\/span>\u00a01163 Israelis have been killed in this conflict so far, according to news reports.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Donald Trump\u2019s Middle East envoy has travelled to Qatar and Israel to kickstart the US president-elect\u2019s diplomatic push to help reach a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal before he takes office on Jan. 20, a source briefed on the talks told Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n
