{"id":24948,"date":"2024-10-23T05:18:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-23T05:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=24948"},"modified":"2024-10-23T05:18:21","modified_gmt":"2024-10-23T05:18:21","slug":"putin-hosts-36-world-leaders-to-display-russias-diplomatic-clout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2024\/10\/putin-hosts-36-world-leaders-to-display-russias-diplomatic-clout\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin hosts 36 world leaders to display Russia&#8217;s diplomatic clout"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; Russian President Vladimir Putin, ostracized by the west and labelled a possible war criminal by the international criminal court, has played host to 36 world leaders from nations including China, India and Iran as part of a summit of the Brics group designed to display Moscow as anything but isolated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the main aims of the summit will be to speed up ways to reduce the number of dollar transactions, and so mitigate the US ability to use the threat of sanctions to seek to impose its political will, reported Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson for the UN secretary general confirmed\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres\u00a0would attend the summit as he did last year. His decision infuriated many in the west, including the Ukrainian foreign ministry, since the international criminal court issued warrants for Putin\u2019s arrest in March 2023 over the abduction of children. The UN said Guterres would repeat his view that the invasion of Ukraine is in breach of the UN charter.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow said the representatives from 36 countries were attending parts of the three-day meeting, making it the largest international gathering hosted by Putin since he ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine\u00a0in February 2022. Russia is this year\u2019s chair of the group.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese president, Xi Jinping, greeted Putin in Kazan as his dear friend, praising the \u201cprofound\u201d friendship between the two countries.
