{"id":24528,"date":"2024-10-12T18:22:03","date_gmt":"2024-10-12T18:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=24528"},"modified":"2024-10-12T18:22:03","modified_gmt":"2024-10-12T18:22:03","slug":"nobel-peace-prize-awarded-to-japanese-atomic-bomb-survivors-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2024\/10\/nobel-peace-prize-awarded-to-japanese-atomic-bomb-survivors-group\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel peace prize awarded to Japanese atomic bomb survivors\u2019 group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\"><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; Survivors of the atomic bombings of Japan almost eight decades ago have won the Nobel peace prize\u00a0for their campaign to rid the world of nuclear weapons.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations \u2013 commonly known as\u00a0Nihon Hidankyo \u2013 received the accolade one year before the 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and at a time of growing concern about the possible use of nuclear weapons, reported Guardian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Nobel committee said it had decided to award the prize to Nihon Hidankyo \u201cfor its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Norwegian committee said testimony by\u00a0<em>hibakusha<\/em> \u2013 survivors of the August 1945 bombings by the US \u2013 had \u201chelped to generate and consolidate widespread opposition to nuclear weapons around the world by drawing on personal stories, creating educational campaigns based on their own experience, and issuing urgent warnings against the spread and use of nuclear weapons\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24530\" src=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1200x675_cmsv2_7b2978a4-4d03-5250-9887-3deee2a2909b-8784112.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1200x675_cmsv2_7b2978a4-4d03-5250-9887-3deee2a2909b-8784112.webp 1200w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1200x675_cmsv2_7b2978a4-4d03-5250-9887-3deee2a2909b-8784112-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1200x675_cmsv2_7b2978a4-4d03-5250-9887-3deee2a2909b-8784112-1024x576.webp 1024w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/1200x675_cmsv2_7b2978a4-4d03-5250-9887-3deee2a2909b-8784112-768x432.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">While the committee noted that nuclear weapons had not been used since the end of the second world war, it said the \u201ctaboo\u201d against their use was \u201cunder pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Russian president, Vladimir Putin, has refused to rule out the use of tactical nuclear weapons against Ukraine, while North Korea has continued to develop nuclear weapons that some experts believe are capable of striking the US mainland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Some will see the prize as a rebuke to Japan\u2019s conservative government, which is dependent for its defence on the US nuclear umbrella and is not among the more than 60 countries that have ratified a 2021 treaty to ban the possession and use of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cAt this moment in human history, it is worth reminding ourselves what nuclear weapons are: the most destructive weapons the world has ever seen,\u201d the Nobel committee said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Between 60,000 and 80,000 people died instantly after the Enola Gay, a US B-29 bomber, dropped a 15-kiloton nuclear bomb on Hiroshima on the morning of 6 August 1945, with the death toll rising to 140,000 by the end of the year.
