{"id":24366,"date":"2024-10-08T08:00:18","date_gmt":"2024-10-08T08:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=24366"},"modified":"2024-10-08T09:11:05","modified_gmt":"2024-10-08T09:11:05","slug":"a-year-on-herat-reels-from-devastation-of-the-earthquake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2024\/10\/a-year-on-herat-reels-from-devastation-of-the-earthquake\/","title":{"rendered":"A year on, Herat reels from devastation of the earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>HERAT CITY (SW) &#8211; A year after the devastating earthquake in the Zinda Jan district of Herat, survivors report ongoing struggles with access to basic living essentials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Ali, a resident of Zinda Jan district, highlights the critical shortage of shelter, drinking water, and medical facilities. \u201cWe have over 50 patients every day in our village that we have to take to the city,\u201d he explains. \u201cThis clinic is inadequate for our needs, and we receive no support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sulaiman, another local, shares that humanitarian aid has been halted for the past four months. \u201cFor four months now, all assistance has been cut off; there is absolutely nothing. The help we received in the past has completely stopped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mahgul, who lost everything in last year&#8217;s earthquake, expresses her despair. \u201cWe have no shelter, and with the cold weather, life has become unbearable,\u201d she says anxiously. \u201cWe have nothing\u2014no fuel or other necessary supplies. The government gave us some money once or twice, but it was insufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Ebrahim, who now lives in a makeshift camp, adds, \u201cIf the weather gets any colder, we\u2019ll have to find shelter in areas that people have dug out for protection against natural disasters, as there\u2019s nowhere else to go.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite these dire conditions, Musa Ashari, head of Disaster Management in Herat, states that nearly 2,000 additional houses are needed for earthquake survivors in the province.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssessments show that around 9,600 houses need to be built for the earthquake victims.
