{"id":2264,"date":"2020-12-11T12:29:22","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T12:29:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=2264"},"modified":"2020-12-11T12:29:22","modified_gmt":"2020-12-11T12:29:22","slug":"un-general-assembly-calls-for-end-to-violence-in-afghanistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2020\/12\/un-general-assembly-calls-for-end-to-violence-in-afghanistan\/","title":{"rendered":"UN General Assembly calls for end to violence in Afghanistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MONITORING (SW) \u2013 The UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution with a majority of 131 votes calling on the parties to the conflict to end violence in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Adopting the resolution \u201cThe situation in Afghanistan\u201d (document\u00a0<u>A\/75\/L.45<\/u>)<u>A\/75\/L.45<\/u>), by a recorded vote of 130 in favour to 1 against (Russian Federation) with 3 abstentions (Belarus, China, Pakistan), the General Assembly pledged its continued support to the country\u2019s Government and people as they rebuild a stable, secure and economically self\u2011sufficient State.<\/p>\n<p>Also by the text, the Assembly reiterated serious concern about the continuing high level of violence and the security situation, stressing the need to continue to address these destabilizing threats caused by terrorist groups and their affiliates.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the occasion, Afghanistan\u2019s representative Adela Raaz said \u201cL.45\u201d reflects national progress and priorities, and the hopes and longings of the Afghan people. \u201cHowever, concerns remain regarding security threats\u201d, she said, emphasizing that Kabul has prioritized action on a range of issues and has not lowered its guard or diminished efforts to fend off terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Highlighting several points, including the call for a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire, expanding on past gains and focusing on the sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity of a democratic Afghanistan, she said \u201cL.45\u201d also summarizes shared achievements of the last 19 years, attained through international and regional support. She also noted the important focus on promoting and protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms, the rule of law and democratic processes \u2014 top priorities for the Government \u2014 and the centrality of an inclusive Afghan\u2011led and Afghan\u2011owned peace process.<\/p>\n<p>According to UN, the Assembly then considered the draft resolution \u201cThe situation in Afghanistan\u201d (document A\/75\/L.45), by which it would pledge its continued support to the Government and people of Afghanistan as they rebuild a stable, secure and economically self\u2011sufficient State.
