{"id":18998,"date":"2024-03-12T04:28:21","date_gmt":"2024-03-12T04:28:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=18998"},"modified":"2024-03-12T04:30:48","modified_gmt":"2024-03-12T04:30:48","slug":"india-conducts-first-flight-of-missile-that-can-carry-multiple-warheads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2024\/03\/india-conducts-first-flight-of-missile-that-can-carry-multiple-warheads\/","title":{"rendered":"India conducts first flight of missile that can carry multiple warheads"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; India has completed the first flight test of a home-grown missile with multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicle (MIRV) technology, India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is the latest development in India\u2019s nuclear-capable Agni missile series, named after the Sanskrit word for \u201cfire\u201d, and part of a project launched in 1983.<\/p>\n<p>The technology delivers multiple warheads to different targets fired from the same missile on the Agni-V platform, which has a range of 5,000 km (3,100 miles), making it India\u2019s sole contender for intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) long-range category.<\/p>\n<p>Modi said on Monday that he was \u201cproud\u201d that the launch of \u201cthe first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology\u201d, in comments on social media platform X.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Defense Rajnath Singh said on X that India had \u201cjoined the select group of nations\u201d capable of the missile technology.<\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_19000\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19000\" style=\"width: 768px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19000 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Untitled-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Untitled-2.jpg 768w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Untitled-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The long-range ballistic Agni-V missile is displayed during the Republic Day parade in New Delhi, India [File: Manish Swarup\/AP]<\/figcaption><\/figure>The United States, United Kingdom, France, China and Russia are among the countries that already use MIRV missiles, while Pakistan tested the technology in 2017, according to Washington-based non-profit advocacy group, the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian missile was developed by the country\u2019s military research arm, the Defense Research and Development Organization.<\/p>\n<p>Delhi has been developing its medium and long-range missile systems since the 1990s, especially as its competition with China grows.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, India successfully tested Agni-V, a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile that is believed to be able to target nearly all of China.
