Concerns are mounting for numerous Rohingya refugees believed to be stranded at sea in the Indian Ocean, as the boat they set off in from Bangladesh has experienced engine failure.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The group of some 185 Rohingya, mostly women and children, are in desperate need of rescue after falling into distress near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Rohingya were fleeing overcrowded refugee camps in Bangladesh, where they had taken shelter after escaping their homeland in Myanmar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The UN agency said at least one of the boat\u2019s passengers had already died, with a dozen more in \u201ccritical condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cMany more could die under the watch of numerous coastal states without timely rescue and disembarkation to the nearest place of safety,\u201d the UNHCR warned. \u201cIt is really a desperate situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-17023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/rohh.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/rohh.jpg 770w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/rohh-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/rohh-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Thousands of the mostly Muslim Rohingya, heavily persecuted in Myanmar, undertake risky sea journeys from their country and refugee camps in Bangladesh every year trying to reach Malaysia or Indonesia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">More than 2,000 Rohingya are believed to have attempted the risky journey to Southeast Asian countries in 2022, according to UNHCR.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Since last year, more than 570 people, including Rohingya refugees, have been reported dead or missing at sea in the region, it said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When it comes to the people currently adrift, the agency emphasized that \u201ca bigger tragedy is preventable with timely efforts to save lives\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThis situation once again underlines the importance of all states in the region deploying their full search and rescue capacities to avoid human disasters happening at this scale.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">SOURCE: AL JAZEERA<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONITORING (SW) &#8211;
