{"id":13053,"date":"2022-12-28T11:47:18","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T11:47:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=13053"},"modified":"2022-12-28T11:48:47","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T11:48:47","slug":"un-urges-the-taliban-to-reverse-policies-targeting-women-and-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2022\/12\/un-urges-the-taliban-to-reverse-policies-targeting-women-and-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"UN urges the Taliban to reverse policies targeting women and girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; The UN security council has called on the Taliban to reverse policies targeting women and girls in Afghanistan, expressing alarm at the \u201cincreasing erosion\u201d of human rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 15-member UN security council said it was \u201cdeeply alarmed\u201d by the increasing restrictions on women\u2019s education, calling for \u201cthe full, equal, and meaningful participation of women and girls in Afghanistan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It urged the Taliban \u201cto reopen schools and swiftly reverse these policies and practices, which represents an increasing erosion for the respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The council also condemned the ban on women working for NGOs, warning of the detrimental impact the ban will have on aid operations in a country where millions rely on them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese restrictions contradict the commitments made by the Taliban to the Afghan people as well as the expectations of the international community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The international community has made respecting women\u2019s rights a condition in negotiations with the Taliban government over the restoration of aid, reported Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>The UN secretary general, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, echoed the security council\u2019s message, calling the latest restrictions on women and girls \u201cunjustifiable human rights violations\u201d that \u201cmust be revoked\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the UN rights chief warned of the \u201cterrible\u201d consequences such policies would have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo country can develop \u2013 indeed survive \u2013 socially and economically with half its population excluded,\u201d said Volker Turk, high commissioner for human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese unfathomable restrictions placed on women and girls will not only increase the suffering of all Afghans but, I fear, pose a risk beyond Afghanistan\u2019s borders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turk warned that banning women from working in NGOs would strip families of crucial incomes as well as \u201csignificantly impair, if not destroy\u201d organisations\u2019 capacity to deliver essential services, calling it all the more distressing with Afghanistan in the grip of winter, when humanitarian needs are at their highest.<\/p>\n<p>Several foreign aid groups announced on Sunday they were suspending their operations in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>Women have also been pushed out of many government jobs, prevented from travelling without a male relative and ordered to cover up outside the home, preferably with a burqa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen and girls cannot be denied their inherent rights,\u201d said Turk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttempts by the de facto authorities to relegate them to silence and invisibility will not succeed.<\/p>\n<p>ENDS<!--\/data\/user\/0\/com.samsung.android.app.notes\/files\/clipdata\/clipdata_bodytext_221228_224447_919.sdocx--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; The UN security council has called on the Taliban to reverse policies targeting women and girls in Afghanistan, expressing alarm at the \u201cincreasing erosion\u201d of human rights.
