KABUL (SW) – Widespread condemnations have poured in as the Islamic Emirate banned women and girls from working in the non-government organisations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The United Nations said it was profoundly concerned by reports that the Taliban de facto authorities issued an order barring all female employees of national and international organizations from going to work with immediate effect. Any such order would violate the most fundamental rights of women, as well as be a clear breach of humanitarian principles, it said.<\/p>\n

The UN said it will seek to meet with the Taliban leadership to obtain clarity on the reported order. Women must be enabled to play a critical role in all aspects of life, including the humanitarian response. Their participation must be both respected and safeguarded. This latest decision will only further hurt those most vulnerable, especially women and girls, it added.<\/p>\n

The UN in Afghanistan and its partners condemn the reported order and remind the de facto authorities that taking away the free will of women to choose their own fate, disempowering and excluding them systematically from all aspects of public and political life takes the country backward, jeopardizing efforts for any meaningful peace or stability in the country, said a statement issued by the UN.<\/p>\n

Earlier,\u00a0 Abdul Rahman Habib, the spokesman of the Ministry of Economy, had confirmed the authenticity of a letter issued regarding the ban.<\/p>\n

In this letter, it is stated that recently, serious complaints regarding non-observance of hijab and other laws and regulations of the Islamic Emirate by women in non-governmental institutions have been noticed.<\/p>\n

In this letter, the Ministry of Economy added that in order to fulfill its responsibility, it directs all domestic and foreign non-governmental institutions to stop the work of all female employees until further notice.<\/p>\n

The ministry has warned that in case of delay in implementing this order, the license of the offending institution will be revoked. The letter was signed by Din Mohammad Hanif, Acting Minister of Economy.<\/p>\n

This comes as the Islamic Emirate recently suspended the education of female students in the country’s universities until further notice.<\/p>\n
