{"id":12901,"date":"2022-12-12T11:24:26","date_gmt":"2022-12-12T11:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=12901"},"modified":"2022-12-12T11:31:10","modified_gmt":"2022-12-12T11:31:10","slug":"deadly-exchange-of-fire-at-chaman-crossing-between-afghanistan-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2022\/12\/deadly-exchange-of-fire-at-chaman-crossing-between-afghanistan-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadly exchange of fire at Chaman crossing between Afghanistan, Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; Pakistan&#8217;s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the deadly exchange of fire at the Chaman crossing point with Afghanistan and called on the interim government in Kabul to ensure that such incidents were not repeated in the future, reported Dawn news.<\/p>\n<p>At least\u00a0seven people lost their lives and 16 others suffered injuries on Sunday in Chaman when it came under \u201cunprovoked and indiscriminate\u201d heavy gunfire and artillery shelling by Afghan border forces, according to the Pakistani military\u2019s media affairs wing.<\/p>\n<p>The incident has been widely condemned across the political divide in Pakistan, with PM Shehbaz\u2019s among the latest denunciations.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet on Monday, PM Shehbaz said the \u201cunprovoked shelling and fire by Afghan Border Forces at Chaman, resulting in [the] martyrdom of several Pakistani citizens and injuring more than a dozen, is unfortunate and deserves the strongest condemnation\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad ad--adjustable my-4 hidden sm:block clear-both py-4\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n<div class=\"js-ad flow-root\">\n<div class=\"radWrapper ad__wrapper\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1455520357400-2\" class=\"ad__wrapper__slot\">\u201cThe Afghan Interim government should ensure that such incidents are not repeated,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The incident was reported on Sunday evening by Pakistan army&#8217;s media affairs wing, the ISPR.<\/p>\n<p>Later, unnamed officials told\u00a0<em>Dawn<\/em>\u00a0that an exchange of fire had taken place between Pakistani and Afghan troops on Sunday when some people from the Afghan side tried to cut a fence near the border village of Lala Mohammad, which resulted in the closing of the Friendship Gate at the Chaman border crossing. However, after half an hour, the border was reopened for traffic and pedestrians, they added.<\/p>\n<p>A short while later, the officials said, Afghan forces started firing between Shoukat and Ilyas Pakistani border posts, prom\u00adpting a response from Pakistani troops. Afghan troops then started using artillery and mortar shells, targeting civilian settlements, they added.<\/p>\n<p>According to them, some mortar shells had landed on a road leading to the border area and the Nato market in the area.<\/p>\n<p><em>BBC Urdu<\/em>\u00a0said\u00a0videos received from Chaman city showed a cloud of dust after a shell fell on the border road near the city.
