MONITORING (SW) – Following the killing of al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in Kabul, US Foreign Secretary Anthony Blinken has accused the Islamic Emirate of violating the Doha Agreement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The world is a safer place following the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said, as he accused Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban regime of grossly violating its commitments to the international community by \u201chosting and sheltering\u201d the al-Qaeda chief in Kabul.<\/p>\n

Blinken said the US will continue to act against those who threaten the country, its people and its allies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have delivered on our commitment to act against terrorist threats emanating from Afghanistan. The world is safer following the death of al Qa\u2019ida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. The U.S. will continue to act against those who threaten our country, our people, or our allies,\u201d he said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Blinken has identified Pakistan as one of the partners the United States has been working with to persuade the Taliban to let girls go back to school.<\/p>\n

On Thursday, Secretary Blinken launched the US-Af\u00adghan Consultative Mecha\u00adnism (USACM), which would enable Afghan citizens to communicate directly with American policymakers.<\/p>\n

Addressing the launching ceremony, the top US diplomat said that besides Pakistan, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Qatar and Turkey, and others were also backing US efforts to convince the Taliban to reverse their decision to keep Afghan girls out of school.<\/p>\n

The new platform \u2014 USACM \u2014 that was launched in Washington on Thursday brings together Afghan women, journalists, and at-risk ethnic and religious communities with the representatives of the US State Department. It will facilitate regular engagement with the US government on issues ranging from human rights documentation to women in Islam, reported Dawn news.<\/p>\n

With USACM\u2019s launch, \u201cwe are taking these relationships to the next level. That\u2019s why I\u2019m so pleased about today,\u201d Secretary Blinken said.\u00a0 He identified the group\u2019s priorities as supporting income-generating activities for Afghan women, strategising ways to help Afghan human rights monitors safely document abuses, and devising new methods to promote religious freedom.<\/p>\n

Afghan assets<\/strong><\/p>\n

The United States has discussed with Taliban officials the possible release of Afghan central bank\u2019s assets frozen after the fall of Kabul in August last year, the US State Department confirmed on Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two sides discussed ongoing efforts to enable the $3.5 billion in licensed Afghan central bank reserves to be used for the benefit of the Afghan people,\u201d said an official statement released in Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe United States expressed the need to address the urgent humanitarian situation in Afghanistan\u201d and also \u201cunderscored the need to accelerate the work on these efforts,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

The meeting, involving Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West and Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson, took place on Wednesday in Tashkent. The meetings took place after the conclusion of the Tashkent Conference on Afghanistan that Uzbekistan hosted on July 26.<\/p>\n

Media reports on the meeting claimed that the talks had made \u201csome progress\u201d and the US and Taliban officials had exchanged proposals for unfreezing the assets. But some differences remained unresolved.<\/p>\n

One of the key differences was over the Taliban\u2019s refusal to replace the bank\u2019s top political appointees, \u201cone of whom is under US sanctions as are several of the movement\u2019s leaders,\u201d one of the reports added<\/p>\n
