{"id":10900,"date":"2022-07-07T11:37:54","date_gmt":"2022-07-07T11:37:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/?p=10900"},"modified":"2022-07-07T11:37:54","modified_gmt":"2022-07-07T11:37:54","slug":"biden-to-rescind-afghanistans-designation-as-a-major-non%e2%80%91nato-ally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/swn.af\/en\/2022\/07\/biden-to-rescind-afghanistans-designation-as-a-major-non%e2%80%91nato-ally\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden to rescind Afghanistan&#8217;s designation as a major non\u2011NATO ally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>MONITORING (SW) &#8211; The US President Joe Biden in a letter to Congress has said that he will officially rescind Afghanistan&#8217;s designation as a major non\u2011NATO ally, reported CNN.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_B187140B-66CE-11D1-FD0A-D5B1A052C326\">In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the President\u00a0wrote: &#8220;In accordance with section 517 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended (22 U.S.C. 2321k), I am providing notice of my intent to rescind the designation of Afghanistan as a Major Non\u2011NATO Ally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_43BFAF1F-B48A-CED6-BEF0-D5B6749E327D\">In 2012, the United States\u00a0named Afghanistan a major non-NATO ally, which cleared the way for the two countries to maintain a defense and economic relationship. Then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the designation during a visit to Kabul.<\/p>\n<p data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_30DDD182-7C6A-AD1E-F5B5-D5B7DFA25C9C\">Unlike NATO allies of the United States, who are bound together by a joint defense pact, there is no mutual defense guarantee as a non-NATO ally. These allies are eligible to receive material and supply loans, as well as serve as a location for US-owned war reserve stockpiles. Additionally, private companies from the designated country can bid on contracts to maintain, repair or overhaul US military equipment overseas.<\/p>\n<p data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_FEED71F8-F367-E027-0E4C-D5D14D778A28\">The ally status had made\u00a0Afghanistan\u00a0eligible to receive military training and assistance, including expediting the sale and leasing of military equipment even after NATO troops left the country.<\/p>\n<p data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_4D31FB57-F7FD-8CD6-1F29-D5CF8FEEBC63\">With Afghanistan&#8217;s status rescinded, the US will have 18 major non-NATO allies,\u00a0according to the State Department.
