KABUL (SW) – Heavy snow has led to highway closures in a number of provinces across Afghanistan.
Ziaul Haq Jundullah, Ghor’s land transportation manager, told Salam Watandar that due to heavy snowfall and storms since last night, the Kabul-Ghor and Ghor-Herat highways as well as all the transportation routes in the districts of this province have been closed to people.
“Last night, we told our agents not to transfer passengers because the weather is not good so that they don’t get stuck on the roads and people don’t face problems.”
Ghor’s land transport commander has asked all passengers not to travel until the weather improves and the closed roads are cleared.
Kabul-Ghor and Ghor-Herat highways, as well as the transportation routes of Ghor districts, are always closed to passenger traffic in winter due to their mountainous nature.
With the beginning of the second week of winter, the residents of Daikundi are worried about the closure of the roads of this province due to snowfall. A number of residents of Daikundi say that following the closure of communication routes, the price of food and fuel in this province will increase and people’s access to health services will be limited.
They added that there have been cases where patients have died because they did not reach the treatment centers. Asif Hanaish, a resident of Miramor Daikandi district, said that every time it snows, the roads are closed for one to two weeks and people’s access to health services is cut off.
“There have been many times that patients did not reach the hospital and died. Women who have given birth have died on the way because they have been stuck for one to several days and nights, and most of the time, their children have died as well.”
