“Reopening of girls schools is not a matter of days”

KABUL (SW) – Officials of the Ministry of Education told “Government’s Accountability to the Nation” that the ministry is working on a specific plan to reopen girls’ schools above the sixth grade.

Aziz Ahmad Rayan, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Education, said in this meeting that the ministry has worked sufficiently in the field of reopening girls’ schools, and in his opinion, “some processes do not take a year, but it takes years.” He added that the issue of reopening girls’ schools above the sixth grade is not a one-day and one-night affair.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Education said: “The Ministry of Education has done enough work in this sector, but some processes are not completed for a year, rather, it takes years and the issue of schools is not a matter of one day and one night. Afghanistan is a traditional country where there are many issues and this is not the place to discuss them in detail.”

According to the officials of the Ministry of Education, there are 17 thousand 780 schools in Afghanistan, of which 15 thousand 83 are public and 2 thousand 697 are private. The total number of school students across the country reaches 10 million, of which 6 million are boys and 4 million are girls.

Officials of the Ministry of Education announced that the number of teachers in Afghanistan’s schools is 242,000, of which 92,000 are women.

On the other hand, Karamatullah Akhundzada, Deputy Minister of Islamic Education of the Ministry of Education, said in this meeting that they have so far registered 20,000 religious scholars.

After one year of the rule of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan, there is still no specific mechanism for reopening girls’ schools above the sixth grade. However, the officials of the Islamic Emirate have repeatedly spoken about the reopening of girls’ schools but the specific time of reopening of girls’ schools is still uncertain.
