JALALABAD (SW) – A group of young men and professional engineers in Haska Mina district of Nangarhar province have started efforts to fight drought by building small water dams.

They say that the locals will pay for the construction of these dams, and so far, 10 dams have been built in the district with a capacity of 35 thousand cubic meters of water.

Parviz Shinwari, one of the engineers, told Salam Watandar that these water dams were built using local materials. He added that these dams will also be very effective in preventing floods in the region.

“These dams are of three types. There are 5 small dams that can store about 1000 cubic meters of water as soil and stone are used in their construction. There are also larger dams than these, which have a capacity of 4,000 to 6,000 cubic meters of water. The third type of dam, which is made of stone and cement, has a high capacity and the villagers can directly open its gate and use its stored water for irrigation. The capacity of these dams is 16,000 cubic meters”.

Small dams, which are not too difficult to build, are considered important for irrigating lands in addition to preventing floods.

Shinwari added that in a number of countries, especially India and Saudi Arabia, such small dams have given good results for irrigating lands.

According to him, in addition to Nangarhar, they have also started the construction of two dams in Paktia and Maidan Wardak provinces, which have the capacity to store thousands of cubic meters of water.

He urged the Islamic Emirate to cooperate with them in this field.

At the same time, residents of the district, who are happy with the construction of these dams, say that these dams are very useful for water storage and irrigation.

Sabavon, a resident of the district, said the locals are very happy with the construction of these dams.”There is no water in many areas and drought has caused many problems to people. May God grant them success to build more dams as well.”
