Thousands of midwives remain jobless

KABUL (SW) – A conference to mark the International Day of the Midwife was informed here on Sunday that thousands of midwives are jobless in the country.

The Ministry of Public Health held a conference in Kabul on the occasion of the International Day of the Midwife. Officials at the Ministry of Public Health said on the occasion that according to the latest figures, there are 34,825 registered midwives in the ministry, of whom only 6,033 are employed.

Mohammad Ishaq Sahebzadeh, Deputy Minister of Finance and Administration of the Ministry of Public Health, said that the rest of the midwives, who number about 28,000, do not have jobs.

At the same time, a number of midwives, in addition to the lack of employment opportunities, also complained about the lack of work privileges and the lack of personal safety.

Helay Gharshin, chairwoman of the Afghan Midwifery Council, called on the Islamic Emirate to resolve the midwives’ problems as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, pledged to pay the midwives’ salaries at the meeting, adding that efforts were also being made to provide them with higher education.
