150 cases of violence against journalists in 8 months

MONITORING (SW) – The Afghanistan Federation of Journalists and Media has said that at least 150 cases of violence against journalists have been reported in the past eight months.

The federation today issued a statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day expressing concern over the lack of job security and the increase in violence against Afghan journalists. It said that the media structures have been damaged and the lack of job security and the increasing violence against journalists have caused concern in the Afghan media community.

Nearly 150 cases of violence against journalists have been reported in the past eight months, and more than 300 media outlets have been shut down in more than a year, the largest number in Afghanistan’s press history, the statement said.

The AFJM called on international organizations and the Islamic Emirate to take effective steps to restore the legal framework to support the Afghan journalistic community and the press, and to put an end to media concerns.

World Press Freedom Day is being celebrated as the media in Afghanistan has been severely restricted for the past nine months or so. On the other hand, many media outlets are closed or are being closed.
