Heavy snowfall claims three lives in Badakhshan

MONITORING (SW) – At least three people have lost their lives in Badakhshan province due to heavy snowfall, officials confirmed.

Maazuddin Ahmadi, head of the Islamic Emirate’s Information and Culture Department in Badakhshan, has said that the incident took place in the Raghistan district when at least eight people got caught under the heavy snowfall.

According to the head of the information and the culture department for Badakhshan, three people died under snow, and five others were rescued by Islamic Emirate and local people.

Five people were killed in a similar event in the village of Tajil of the district a while back.

Earlier, an earthquake event of magnitude 5.3 (US Geological Survey) at a depth of 10 km occurred on 17 January at 16.10 in Badghis province, close to the Turkmenistan border. The quake caused the death of 26 people, including five women and four children.

According to media, up to 700 houses may have been damaged. Rescuers arrived at the affected area. Some homes in Qala-e-Naw (the provincial capital) suffered cracks, without reports on major injuries of damage.
