Analysts see Pakistan exploiting Islamic Emirate’s weaknesses

KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe Pakistan is aiming to exploit the weakness of the Islamic Emirate in Afghanistan for its own strategic objectives.

The dispute between Pakistan and the Islamic Emirate over the alleged extension of barbed wire by the Pakistani military along the Durand Line and rocket attacks on the eastern part of the country has recently escalated.

Some analysts believe that by doing so, Pakistan is trying to weaken the government of the Islamic Emirate and misrepresent the situation to its people and the world.

International affairs expert Javed Mohammad says the issue of extending the barbed wire on the Durand Line belongs not only to the Islamic Emirate, but also to the people and must be addressed accordingly.

He said Pakistan was facing an economic crisis and wanted to draw the attention of its people and the world to the Durand Line issue and work for its own benefit at the international level so that aid to Afghanistan could be channeled through it.

“The issue is attracting international attention and they are lobbying more,” he told Salam Watandar. “Now the real issue is the humanitarian aid that is being given to Afghans, Pakistan wants our banks to be paralyzed and finally we get this aid from their banks which they will pay taxes and finally only 3 or 5 percent will come to us. The rest will go to their budget.”

Another analyst, Mohammad Hassan Haqyar, says Pakistan is taking advantage of the current situation in Afghanistan, where the Islamic Emirate is not recognized and is facing economic and political crisis, not only on the Durand Line, but on various fronts.

He said Pakistan was now in a strong position, but if it continued to extend the barbed wire by force, it could not succeed because the people on both sides of the line would stand against it.

“The reality is that Pakistan has crossed the border in Nangarhar for more than two kilometers and there were weak governments in Afghanistan. That is the punishment for weakness. Pakistan is not ashamed of it. Now that the government of the Islamic Emirate has been formed, although there are many problems and this government is not so strong, but it does not trade over the national interest”.

Earlier, officials from Pakistan and the Islamic Emirate had said that the issue of extending the Durand Line would be resolved through talks. But, a Pakistani army spokesman said yesterday that the barbed wire had caused a lot of bloodshed and that the project would be completed anyway.
