Authorities set to increase the power tariffs

KABUL (SW) – Authorities are set to increase the power tariffs in the wake of the surging US dollar value against the afghani currency.

Officials at the power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat, or DABD, have announced an increase in the cost of electricity, saying that with the increase in the value of dollar against the afghani in the country’s markets, the plan to increase the cost of electricity is a work in progress and will be implemented in the near future.

Hekmatullah Maiwandi, a spokesman for Breshna, told Salam Watandar that the plan to increase the cost of electricity is underway and will be implemented in a few days. Maiwandi stated that the reason for Breshna’s work is the increase in the price of dollars in the country.

The spokesman for Breshna added that Afghanistan imports $ 220 million to $ 260 million worth of electricity annually from Iran, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan for 2.5 cents per kWh. He emphasizes that if there is no change in the price of electricity, Breshna will face economic problems and the imported electricity will be cut off.

Breshna officials are announcing an increase in the cost of electricity in the country as a number of Kabul residents call this decision as unfair towards the people. They say that in the current situation, people can not afford to pay more.

Breshna’s decision comes as the company recently released a list according to which most former government officials, members of the parliament and a number of jihadi commanders and local strongmen owe millions of afghanis to the company.
