Herat hospital in need of urgent support

HERAT CITY (SW) – The regional public hospital in Herat province is flooded with patients as delivery of services come to a standstill in the nearby provinces due to lack of resources.

Seyed Hesamuddin is a resident of Badghis province who came to Herat about 20 days ago to treat his child.

“It takes almost 20 days to come to the city of Herat. I go from one hospital to another, and at the end of the day we were told to go to the main public hospital with the ill child. Is this our view of treating patients in a Muslim society? “

On the other hand, a number of other patients in Herat District Hospital say that in addition to the negligence of health officials, they have been compelled to buy all of their patients’ medicines from private pharmacies. “My name is Gholam Mohammad,” said one patient. “We have brought a child who got burned, we have been told that the patient would not be treated if there is no fee to pay”.

However, officials at the Herat District Hospital acknowledge the lack of medicine and health facilities and warn that if the situation is not addressed seriously, the provision of health services in Herat will be disrupted in the near future.

Mohammad Arif Jalali, chief physician at the Herat District Hospital, said they have worked hard to ensure that healthcare is not discontinued.

According to Herat health officials, they have not received any facilities or medicine for the past two years, and have shared the problem with the government and other partner institutions in the health sector to prevent the health system from collapsing in the province.
