Female teachers in Baghlan in despair

PUL-I-KHUMRI (SW) – There has been a significant drop in the number of female teachers in Baghlan province.

Sources in the Baghlan Department of Education told Salam Watandar that in the schools of Pul-e-Khumri city, the capital of the province alone, 60% of principals and teachers were women; but now, with the establishment of the Taliban’s Islamic Emirate, this figure has dropped to 5 percent.

According to sources, most of the teachers who had the proper facilities have left the city and are trying to flee the country. According to sources, the salaries of female teachers in the province have not been paid for several months, and many of them are in a bad economic situation.

Sources also say that a large part of the employees of the Baghlan Department of Education were women, but there is no news about them now.

Meanwhile, a number of female teachers who used to support their families with their salaries say they are now in a bad economic situation.

Naghma, a teacher who takes care of her four children, said her husband was killed by security forces in the previous government and was the only breadwinner for her family. She said she is now worried about the future of her children.

Mojgan, who received her bachelor’s degree from the Faculty of Persian Literature, said she is worried about the future of female teachers and that this trend has damaged their psyche. Mojgan said that like her, dozens of other women were educating girls in Baghlan, but now they are in trouble.

These female teachers added that no institution addresses their problems. They warned that if this trend continued, these women will suffer from mental disorders in the not-too-distant future.

Gul Makay, another teacher in Pul-i-Khumri whose husband is also a teacher, had left all their belongings after the Taliban took control of Baghlan and is now in Nimroz in a bid to flee to Iran. She said she has to go abroad for the sake of her children.

Sources in the Baghlan Department of Education said that more than 2,000 female teachers were working in the province and that these women, as well as some 10,000 female students, are currently living in complete disrepair.

On the other hand, the officials of the Islamic Emirate in Baghlan says that they are working on a specific program to ensure the safety of women so that women can return to their jobs. According to them, women who work in government agencies are currently in their homes due to lack of physical security, and if the program is finalized, they will return to work.
