Wolesi Jirga calls for regulating local uprising forces

KABUL (SW) – Members of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) on Moonday called for proper monitoring of the recently formed armed uprising forces against the Taliban.

As the Taliban mount attacks and keep seizing districts, popular uprisings are taking place in a number of districts to retake lost areas across the country. Dozens of people have been taking up arms against Taliban fighters and fighting alongside security forces.

The members of the house on Monday said they were concerned about the activities of the popular uprising forces. According to them, although the mobilization of the people against the Taliban will improve the security situation, but the activities of these forces should not call into question the competence and function of the security forces.

At today’s plenary session, a number of members said that if the forces of the popular uprising are not controlled, they will become a serious headache and will engage in arbitrary activities. Members of the house added that the distribution of weapons by the government to these forcesis unnecessary until the activities of the popular uprising forces are properly legalized.

Mohammad Rahim Aliyar, a member of the house, reiterated that the defense ministry should regulate these forces. “They should be given weapons and facilities from within the framework of the National Directorate of Security and the Ministry of National Defense and they should be regulated so that the concerns are addressed.”

Siddiq Ahmad Osmani, another member of the house, said people would naturally defend themselves against the Taliban, but the distribution of arms by the government was not needed.

Meanwhile, Mir Rahman Rahmani, speaker of the house, said that the popular uprising forces should be legally created and organized by the Ministry of Defense allowed to work under the umbrella of the local army.

We wanted to have the view of the Ministry of Defense on it, but to no avail.
