President Ghani’s surgery in Kabul stirs debate in social media

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has underwent a successful prostate surgery in Kabul, officials announced.

“I had a successful prostate operation at the Shaheed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Hospital by the experienced doctors. I would like to thank all the doctors and nurses of this hospital for successfully completing my operation at this very moment,” Ghani tweeted from hospital.

Many of top officials, adviser have wished the President speedy recovery.

Vice President Amrullah Saleh, said in a series of social media posts that he has spoken on the phone with the president. “I pray to Allah Almighty for the good health of the honorable president [Ashraf Ghani],” Saleh said and added that the president has returned to the presidential palace.

Meanwhile, a number of social media users expressed their frustration and dislike towards this post and dubbed it as a symbolic show.

Aminullah Foroutan, one such said this issue has been highlighted for campaign purpose because similar pictures from treatment abroad are never publicly posted.

The president’s cultural affairs adviser Shah Hussain Murtazavi has also been criticized for posting a picture of President Ghani while reading. Social media user stressed such officials never speak against shortcoming of their leaders.

Farhad Mousavi, another social media user said the government hospitals do not provide any kind of health services for ordinary clients and provide the worst and most worn-out equipment to the patient, but they provide the best equipment for the president. He said that the president’s problem was not very serious, otherwise he would have gone abroad for treatment.

A number of Facebook users have also made bizarre comments under a BBC report on this issue forcing the British broadcaster to ask them to respect rules of the page. “We thank all the respected individuals who write their views. Expressing the opinion is the inalienable right of all. Once again, we sincerely ask all users to follow the principles and rules of the page when expressing their views. Avoid insulting, insulting and accusing others.”

However, a number of users also welcomed the president’s move, calling it a show of confidence in the country’s health system.

Hadees Poya, a social media user, wrote that other powerful individuals and politicians go abroad for treatment of even minor problems, but undergoing treatment within the country, President Ghani has expressed his confidence in doctors and hospital in Afghanistan.
