Suspect involved in Kabul University massacre nabbed

JALALABAD (SW) – Officials in Nangarhar claimed to have nabbed another mastermind of a deadly attack on Kabul University last year.

Zia-ul-Haq Amarkhail, the governor of Nangarhar, said in a social media post that Hazrat Ali also known as Abu Saeed Azam was arrested along with two other suspects as a result of a special operation by national security forces in Achin district.

According to him, the operation was launched last night in Achin district. Governor Amarkhail added that the suspect planned the attack on Kabul University and had contacts not only with Daesh leaders inside the country, but also with members of the group in Iraq, Syria and Belgium.

The National Directorate of Security also confirmed the arrest.

At least 22 students and faculty members were killed and about 40 were injured in the attack on Kabul University last year.

Prior to the latest arrest, officials had announced the arrest of five individuals involved in the incident. Some of those suspects were sentenced to death by an appellate court.

The Taliban denied involvement in the incident while Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack.
