President vows to boost domestic publication of academic books

KABUL (SW) – President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani said on Tuesday from now onwards all academic books would be published within the country.

He said this while inaugurating the new academic year. President Ghani said about one million new students would be enrolled in the education system and over 11,000 new teachers would be appointed. He added that the salaries of teachers and staff of the Ministry of Education will be increased from the first day of this month, but the process would be completed in six months to come.

According to the President, 1800 new schools will be built this year and for the first time, paper will be produced domestically and the duty on imported paper will be increased to 20 percent to support domestic production.

President Ghani added that for the first time in many years, good quality books would be published in the country. He stressed the quality of education should be taken seriously.

Meanwhile, Acting Minister of Education Rangina Hamidi promised at the opening ceremony of the new academic year that serious attention will be paid to the quality of the education system so that students can be prepared to compete at the regional level.

She said the education system would also be upgraded.
