Takkhar residents demand construction of dams, airport

TALUQAN (SW) – Takhar residents on Wednesday staged a protest march in the city of Taloqan, the capital of the province, calling on the government to build a dams and airport here.

Under the banner of ‘Citizens Movement for Change’, the protesters demanded building of dams on Kokcha River and in the Warsuj Valley as well as an airport in the province.

Protesters accused the government leaders of political and partisan discriminations, saying that if the dams are built, it will help reduce poverty and lead to self-sufficiency in energy.

They said as the government plans to inaugurate 100 development projects in different parts of the country in the first 100 days of the year 1400, but the two projects they demand are not in the list.

Protesters also urged people’s representatives in the parliament and international aid agencies to pay attention to their demands.

Esmatullah Qurbani, a representative of the people in the provincial council, said that the youth of the province are getting killed every day in the ranks of the security forces. He added that it is the right of the people of Takhar that the government respond positively to their demands.

The Kokcha River is located in the north of Takhar, and according to the residents of the province, the land in its surrounding are being usurped by the powerful figures every year due to the negligence of the government.

It is worth noticing the technical survey for the construction of Kokcha Hydroelectric Dam and power plant was completed during the reign of Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan over four decades ago.
