Hezb-e-Islami protesters take to the streets in Kabul

KABUL (SW) – The Hezb-e-Islami supporters, led by Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, took to the streets in capital Kabul on Friday as part of the ten-day agitation drive against the government.

Hezb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar announced the launch of the rally at a news conference yesterday, saying he had given the government ten days to comply with the party’s demands. He also said that he had asked government officials to resign as soon as possible in order to form a government based on the main will of the people and political parties.

Hekmatyar warned that he would stage similar protests in other cities if government officials did not resign and the party’s demands were not heeded. “We want the resignation of this ‘failed and inefficient’ government”, he said.

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Kabul police command, Ferdaus Faramarz, has said they had not been notified of the demonstration, but if there is a demonstration by Hezb-e-Islami, the security of protesters will be ensured.
