Areas identified in Kabul with radioactive natural materials

KABUL (SW) – A number of areas in the capital Kabul have been identified to possess high levels of radioactive natural materials, said officials on Monday.

According to the Afghanistan’s High Commission for Atomic Energy, among these areas include the Afshar, Qasaba and a number of other areas.

Zahidullah Zahid, acting deputy head of Afghanistan’s Atomic Energy Organization, told a press conference in connection with the accountability drive programs that at least 250 families have been sensitized on safety in this regard. He did not share detail about the total number of people at risk with the radiation.

Afghanistan became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 63 years ago and officially became its 22nd member. The High Commission for Atomic Energy was set up in 2011, but people in Afghanistan still do not have the necessary knowledge about it.

It should be noted that the operations of the HCAE is peaceful and in the fields of medicine, agriculture, security, mining and water, as well as in preventing the use of weapons of mass destruction.
