AGO says over 200 cases sorted in a year

KABUL (SW) – More than 200 cases of administrative corruption were sorted out during the past one year, the Attorney General’s Office said on Wednesday.

Officials at the Attorney General’s Office told a press conference here that a total of 224 cases of corruption involving 500 defendants have been registered and investigated in this period. According to the AGO, 500 defendants have been brought to court in connection with these cases.

Jamshid Rasouli, spokesman for the Attorney General’s Office, told the news conference in Kabul the Justice and Judicial Center for Combating Serious Crimes as well as the central and provincial prosecutor’s offices were involved in the investigation of these cases. According to him, out of 224 cases some 102 cases were related to different provinces

Rasouli said the defendants were involved in corruption cases at various levels, including deputies at various ministries, provincial governors as well as military and civilian officials.

According to him, most of the charges against these officials were related to bribery, embezzlement and abuse of official powers. Rasouli said these anti-corruption measures were unprecedented.

He further said the Attorney General’s Office has had more than 80,000 meetings with various segments of society in order to bring about reforms and address the demands of the people.
